The value of a long warranty might be priceless
How many of you are searching for products on the internet and when, as soon as the results appear, you shuffle to order to display lowest cost first? I think many of us do (including this author), but while price will always be key in decision making, the warranty period should also be borne in mind as well.
Many electrical appliances will come with an initial 12 month’s manufacturers warranty. But, be honest, how many people only expect their new domestic appliance (large or small) to only last a year?
If your appliance lets you down outside of the warranty you will either face a (possibly hefty) repair bill or the choice the replace the broken product.
As manufacturers’ quality improves, so does their confidence to offer longer warranty periods. 2 year warranties are not uncommon, but now we are seeing 5 year warranties on a range of appliances – although terms and conditions often apply.
5 year warranties from Bosch, NEFF and Siemens
The trick top getting maximum life from your appliance is twofold. (1) Follow helpful cleaning and maintenance tips at the recommended intervals. (2) Warranty and warranty extensions.
As you can see to the left, NEFF will provide a 5 year warranty when you purchase a selected appliance. Take care to note, if the warranty is a time limited promotion/offer to encourage you to purchase AND how soon the product(s) needs to be registered after purchase to qualify.
If an extended warranty period is important to you, let us know, so we can recommend suitable appliances to you. Also, be careful to accurately understand the warranty conditions and registration process.
Finally, when you consider the lifetime ownership cost of a product, an extended warranty (after the initial manufacturers warranty has expired), may be more expensive that the purchase cost up front for an appliance with a 5 year warranty at the outset.
