White trainers and summer. They go together like cookies and cream.

That is until your white trainers are not so white, off-white, or not white at all, and in need of a thorough clean. The good news is you can bring them back to new by cleaning them in the washing machine. But only when you follow some simple golden rules!
This article is written with trainers in mind, and other shoes with a washing friendly label or a carefully hand clean notice.
- Pre-wash preparation. Remove the worst of any excess dirt by hand. Unlace the trainers; the laces can still go in the machine with the shoes.
- Put your trainers into a sealable mesh bag before placing them in the drum. Add towels if you want to cushion the noise during the washing cycle
- If your washing machine does not have a shoe cycle then select a low temperature i.e. 20 or 30°. Use half a normal dose of washing liquid and select a fast spin.
- Once washed, air dry your trainers. DO NOT PUT THEM IN THE TUMBLE DRYER. Stuff the insides with old newspaper to speed up the drying process
- Hit the streets again in your new look, newly clean trainers.
