The days of hanging out your washing on the line to dry have passed sadly for another year. Many families are reliant over Autumn and Winter on their tumble dryer for fresh, soft and snug clothing.
But what if you need to replace your existing tumble dryer? Or you are considering one for the first time? What are the good things to know before you purchase one?
Not all tumble dryers the same size. It is possible to choose between a full-size and a compact tumble dryer depending on the location and space you have identified for it.
Tumble dryer capacities range from 4 kg up to 10 kg. Household sizes and their laundry needs are very different. Think about your family’s needs and their laundry and drying habits. A 5kg capacity may suit a couple, whereas a 10kg capacity might better suit a large family.
Different ways to tumble dry your laundry.
This is where it gets a bit more complicated. Convenience, price and energy efficiency all impact the type of tumble dryer that you choose.
Vented tumble dryer. Damp air is extracted outside by a hose through either a window or a hole in the wall. Vented tumble dryers offer good overall value for money.
Condenser tumble dryer. Moisture from the laundry collects in a water reservoir that needs to be emptied regularly. The appliance can be installed anywhere assuming the location is well ventilated. Condensers cost a little more compared to vented but offer a lot more convenience.
Heat pump tumble dryer. During the drying process, warm air is recirculated through a heat pump. Energy efficiency is the big bonus here, but these models do cost more. That said, you may actually save more money in energy over the lifetime of the tumble dryer.
Automatic tumble dryer. Built-in sensors detect when the tumble-dried load is dry. All the guesswork is taken out, and you are not wasting electricity unnecessarily.
Energy efficiency rating for Tumble Dryers
We all want to reduce our energy bills and buying energy-efficient appliances is a great place to start. Tumble dryers had a reputation for being expensive to run, but modern models have lots of energy-saving features to help you cut costs.

Sensor drying, programmes by fabric type, times programmes and one-off programmes, for re-fresh, single items, wool-care, allergy etc.
