Tips for extending the life of your washing machine

9 September 2026 by Nick Shrimpton

By performing a few simple and regular maintenance habits, you can extend the life of your washing machine and prevent costly breakdowns.

To keep your appliance running smoothly, focus on things you can do for each and every wash as well as a regular (monthly) cleaning schedule.

Each time you use your washing machine

  • Don’t overload the drum. Stuffing too many clothes into the machine strains the motor, damages the bearings, and unbalances the spin cycle. Ideally fill it so your hand can still fit comfortably at the top of the drum.
  • Cut back on detergent. More liquid or powder does not equal cleaner clothes. Modern washing machines require very little detergent. Excess suds create a slimy biofilm, clogs internal components, and may cause unpleasant odours.
  • Every time check the pockets. Loose change, keys, hairpins, and tissues can damage or puncture the drum, tear other rubber seals, or clog the drain pump.
  • In between uses, leave the door of the machine ajar. After every wash, leave the door and the detergent drawer slightly open. This allows moisture to evaporate, preventing black mould and mildew from damaging the rubber gasket.

Monthly Maintenance Checklist

  • Run a maintenance wash. Once a month, run an empty cycle on your hottest setting (60°C or 90°C). Use a dedicated washing machine cleaner tablet or two cups of white vinegar in the drum to dissolve limescale and soap scum.
  • Clean the pump filter. Front-load machines have a small access door at the bottom front. Place a towel down, open the hatch, unscrew the filter, and rinse away trapped lint, hair, and other debris.
  • Wipe the rubber door seal. Use a damp microfiber cloth to clean out the folds of the rubber door seal, as water and stray socks often get trapped there.
  • Scrub the soap drawer. Completely pull out the detergent drawer and rinse it under warm water to clear out dried, gummy fabric softener and powder build up.

Mechanical Adjustments

  • Check your washing machine is level. If your machine rocks, walks, or bangs violently during the spin cycle, the internal parts are under extreme stress. Place a spirit level on top of the machine and adjust the screw-in legs underneath until it sits perfectly flat.
  • Inspect the water hoses. Check the rubber water hoses at the back of the machine at least once a year for cracks, blisters, or leaks.
