What to think about when buying a built-in oven

4 September 2026 by Nick Shrimpton

When buying a built-in oven, the most important factors to consider are size and fit, heat source, added features, cooking capacity and of course cost. Because built-in ovens are integrated directly into your kitchen cabinetry, getting the measurements right is paramount to avoid costly modification errors. Our installation team can do a pre-site survey to address this before you place your order.

Here is our checklist of what to consider before making your purchase:

Size, fit and configuration

  • Dimensions: Measure the height, width, and depth of your cabinet cut out precisely. Most standard single ovens are 60cm wide, but compact options and larger 90cm widths are also options.
  • Single vs. Double:
    • Single ovens are compact, space-saving, and can be installed at eye level or under a counter.
    • Double ovens offer two separate cooking compartments, allowing you to bake and grill at different temperatures simultaneously. They require more vertical cabinet space.
  • Placement: Decide if you want an eye-level installation (easier on your back) or a classic under-counter setup.

Cooking technology and features

  • Convection (Fan) vs. Conventional: Fan-assisted ovens circulate hot air evenly, cooking food faster and at lower temperatures. Conventional ovens rely on top and bottom heating elements, which can create hot spots but are great for traditional baking.
  • Smart Functions: Look for Wi-Fi connectivity if you want to preheat your oven remotely or download specific cooking algorithms via smartphone apps.
  • Telescopic Runners: These allow shelves to slide out fully without tipping over, making it much safer to check on heavy roasts.

Cleaning systems

  • Pyrolytic Cleaning: This high-heat mode burns away grease and food residue into a fine ash that you can easily wipe away. It is highly effective but draws a lot of power.
  • Catalytic Liners: These special chemical oven walls absorb fat and grease splashes, breaking them down during normal cooking at high temperatures. They never need deep cleaning but may need replacement after several years.
  • Steam/Hydrolytic Cleaning: A quick, eco-friendly option that uses water and low heat to loosen light dirt in about 30 minutes.

Power and efficiency

  • Fuel Type: Most built-in ovens are electric, which offers precise temperature control and even heat distribution. Gas built-in models exist but are less common and require professional qualified installation.
  • Energy Ratings: Check the energy efficiency label (look for A+ or higher ratings) to keep your long-term electricity bills in check.
