Organise your fridge freezer for food preservation and energy efficiency

23 April 2025 by Nick Shrimpton

Ace Electric sells a wide range of fridges, freezers and fridge freezers in Fleet, both free-standing and integrated. Once your new appliance is installed and working, there are easy steps to organise your fridge freezer for improved efficiency. From decluttering to proper food storage, here are some tips to help reduce waste, save energy, and keep your food fresh.

1. Declutter and clean your fridge freezer

Start with the obvious basic advice. Empty and sort through the items in the fridge freezer, throwing away all out-of-date produce. Although a new fridge freezer delivered by us won’t need a thorough clean, our friends at Euronics have a cleaning guide that may use useful for later on.

2. Store similar foods together and on the right shelf

Different areas of the fridge freezer have slightly different temperatures. It is helpful to store food correctly to maintain freshness and avoid contamination. So where is the best place to store the different items in your fridge freezer?

Top shelves: Cooked food, prepared meals (including leftovers.) to be stored here. The top shelf should be for items that don’t need further cooking. Always place cooked food above raw food to prevent cross-contamination.

Middle/lower shelves: These are ideal for dairy products. For optimal freshness, store milk at the back of the fridge where it is cooler. Admittedly, you may need to adjust the shelf height to fit larger containers like 2/4 pint milk cartons.

Bottom shelf: This is the coldest part of the fridge. It is the ideal place for raw meat and fish. Again, ensure products are wrapped properly to prevent leaks or cross-contamination.

Drawers: Keep your fruit, vegetables, salads, and herbs fresh (and in their original packaging) inside the drawers.

Fridge door shelves: The door is the warmest part of your fridge, so store items like juices, condiments, and jams here, as they’re more resilient to slight temperature fluctuations.

3. Store food in sealed clear containers or bags

Invest in a set of refrigeration-proof clear containers (and freezer bags, IKEA do good ones that are double sealed) to store food. Label and date the contents as you put them in. This won’t just make food easier to find, it will also prevent spills and help stabilise your fridge freezer’s temperature by sealing moisture in.

DID YOU KNOW? Some fruits and vegetables (e.g., tomatoes, nectarines and plums) are best kept out of the fridge because the natural ripening gas they release can prematurely ripen and spoil other produce.

4. Don’t overload the fridge freezer

No apologies for stating the obvious, but don’t cram your fridge freezer. We know at Christmas, it’s tough, but with too much food, it won’t just make things tricky to find, it will also stop it cooling efficiently as the air can’t move freely around.
